Exploring the Wonders of Grand Teton National Park

This blog post is part of my 30-day road trip exploring the stunning national parks and landscapes across the United States. Every stop reveals a new facet of nature’s beauty—from the colorful cliffs of Badlands National Park to the towering peaks of the Rockies. See How I Find Off-the-Beaten-Path Destinations in the USA. Today’s highlight: the awe-inspiring Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

Arrival at Grand Teton National Park

As you approach Grand Teton National Park, the first thing that captures your attention is the dramatic silhouette of the Teton Range. These jagged peaks rise abruptly from the valley floor, often framed by morning mist or glowing sunsets.

Driving along Teton Park Road is a visual treat. With each bend, a new postcard-worthy view emerges, making it a paradise for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Mormon Row: A Glimpse into the Past

One of the most iconic photography spots in the park is Mormon Row. This historic district, established by Mormon homesteaders in the late 1800s, is known for its picturesque barns set against the backdrop of the Tetons.

  • John and Bertha Moulton Barn: The more famous of the two, this barn is a magnet for sunrise photographers.
  • TA Moulton Barn: Slightly lesser-known but equally photogenic, offering tranquil views and a peaceful atmosphere.

Wildlife Encounters in Grand Teton

Grand Teton is teeming with wildlife, making every visit a potential safari. On our trip, I spotted a majestic bull elk—his enormous antlers alone were a sight to behold. Although he didn’t look up from his meal, the experience was unforgettable.

Later, we saw a mother moose and her calf grazing peacefully by a pond. This was one of the many magical moments that highlight the park’s rich biodiversity.

Biking Through Grand Teton’s Majestic Landscapes

Years ago, my husband and I visited the park and saw the extensive bike trails. It instantly became a bucket list item to return and ride those scenic paths—and this time, we made it happen.

We biked 27 miles round trip from our hotel in Jackson, WY, through the heart of the park.

Highlights of the Ride:

  • The dedicated bike path offers safe, scenic travel through wildflower meadows and alongside glacial lakes.
  • The Teton Range accompanies you nearly the entire ride, creating an awe-inspiring backdrop.
  • On the return ride, the Elk Refuge and Jackson ski slopes add an extra layer of visual interest.

The trail is well-maintained and suitable for riders of all levels. We took our time, stopping often just to soak in the scenery.

Where to Stay: Jackson, Wyoming

We based ourselves in Jackson, WY, just minutes from Grand Teton’s entrance. It’s the ideal hub for biking, dining, and exploring.

  • Cozy and bike-friendly
  • Walking distance to restaurants and shops
  • Easy access to the park and scenic trails

After a long day of adventure, stroll through Jackson’s quaint streets. Enjoy the local shops and eateries is a perfect way to unwind.
