Hiking Through History in Hocking Hills

Have you ever read a book that made you want to jump up, grab your hiking boots, and go? That’s exactly what happened to me after reading about Grandma Gatewood, a hiking legend with grit and determination. Her story nudged me toward one of Ohio’s most breathtaking natural escapes: Hocking Hills.

Inspired by her love of nature, I packed my camera and set out to explore the sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, and caves that make this region so unforgettable.

Why Hocking Hills?

With its dramatic rock formations, whispering hemlocks, and flowing waterfalls, Hocking Hills feels like a world apart.

Old Man’s Cave is where I started—winding down stone steps into a gorge of mossy walls and echoing waterfalls. From there, I made my way to Cedar Falls (a favorite!) and finally, Ash Cave, where the sound of falling water bouncing off the rock overhang gave me chills.

These trails are not just scenic—they’re restorative. They remind you to slow down and breathe in the forest air.

A Personal Connection

Reading Grandma Gatewood’s story before visiting gave me an added layer of appreciation, but you don’t need to know her to feel the magic here. Each trail has its own rhythm—bridges to cross, ledges to climb, and moments of light that break through the canopy in golden streaks.

Naturally, I had my camera ready to capture the moss-covered bridges, sandstone ledges, and those dreamy shafts of light that make you pause.

If You Go

I stayed at the Hocking Hills Lodge, and it made the entire experience even better. Nestled among the trees and just minutes from the trailheads, the lodge offers modern comfort with rustic charm. There’s a big fireplace in the lobby, gorgeous views from the back patio, and even a pool if you feel like relaxing after your hike. Plus, having a warm meal at the lodge restaurant after a long day on the trails? Absolutely perfect.

Hocking Hills has something for everyone. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, admiring natural arches, or just sipping coffee at a cozy cabin, it’s worth the trip. Keep an eye out for signs and plaques honoring Grandma Gatewood if you’re curious about her story.
